Romance Scams on the Rise
Another type of cryptocurrency scam that has become prevalent in Hong Kong is the "pig butchering scam." This scam typically involves a scammer who builds a relationship with a victim over a period of time, gaining their trust before convincing them to invest in cryptocurrency.
Police Response
Hong Kong's police force has been actively investigating cryptocurrency scams. In 2022, they received 67 more scam reports related to cryptocurrencies than in the previous year. They have also made several arrests and frozen millions of dollars in assets.
