Brood XIX and Brood XIII Set to Appear in Midwest and Southeast

Trillions of periodical cicadas are expected to emerge from the ground this spring in the Midwest and Southeast, marking their first dual appearance since 1803. According to an interactive map created by the University of Connecticut, Brood XIX will emerge in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Brood XIII will emerge in Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Cicadas are large, flying insects that are known for their distinctive buzzing sound. They emerge from the ground after spending 13 or 17 years underground as nymphs.
