Breaking into the Olympics: A Guide to Breakdancing's Debut

Olympic Breakdancing: A Brief History

Breakdancing, also known as breaking, is a dance style that emerged in the Bronx, New York City, in the early 1970s. It is characterized by its athleticism, improvisation, and creativity. Breakdancing has been featured in films, television shows, and music videos, and has become a global phenomenon.

In 2024, breakdancing will make its Olympic debut at the Paris Games. This will be the first time that breaking has been included in the Olympic program.

Olympic Breakdancing Rules

The Olympic breakdancing competition will be divided into two events: men's and women's. Each event will consist of two rounds: a preliminary round and a final round.

In the preliminary round, each dancer will perform a one-minute routine. The top 16 dancers from each event will advance to the final round.

In the final round, each dancer will perform a two-minute routine. The dancers will be judged on their technical skills, creativity, and showmanship.

Scoring

The dancers will be scored by a panel of nine judges. The judges will evaluate the dancers on the following criteria:

  • Technical skills
  • Creativity
  • Showmanship

The judges will award each dancer a score between 0 and 10. The dancer with the highest score will be declared the winner.
